So you’re looking for a home but can’t find exactly what you want. The garden isn’t big enough, the living room isn’t open enough, or the location isn’t good enough? – It just isn’t enough, and why should you settle for less just because you can’t find your perfect house? – You shouldn’t. So why not build it yourself?
Sure it will take a lot of hard work and time, but once it’s done, you will have your own, unique palace that you created. – Here’s what you need to do…
Find a building plot
This can be one of the most stressful things because this is where your future home is going to be, so you need to 100% sure before making any decisions. There are many sites out there though that advertise plots in all different kinds of areas, so it’s just about keeping an eye open for a good deal.
Sort out the money
Before you start anything, you will need a plan of action with how you are going to fund everything. You may have a savings account already if you’ve been planning for this day for a very long time, but if you haven’t, the most common source of funding is by taking out a loan. Just make sure you compare interest rates before agreeing to anything.
Decide on a realistic budget
Be sensible when it comes to making a budget – yes it’s not going to be cheap, but you don’t need to end up bankrupt either. Speak to some reputable builders, tell them your ideas and see what figure they come up with. – Don’t go with the first person you meet, shop around and get lots of different quotes!
Do your research online too – you can never know too much. So ask all questions you need to.
Find yourself a designer
Whatever direction you want your home to take, you need to get the right designers and builders to achieve that. It’s important to think about things like what you want your house to be made out of, like brick, or wood, or steel (or everything!) More people are using steel structures nowadays because they are durable with virtually no maintenance, so companies like Armstrong Steel are good for this.
It’s important to make sure everyone is on the same page before anything else happens, so have regular meetings and conversations about your plan. Get designs made and look over them again and again (and again!) so you’re sure of what you’re getting.
Once everything is in order, and the plot is prepared, you can get building. Take regular visits to see how everyone is getting on and make sure you’re happy with how things are looking. That way if you spot anything you’re not happy with, as long as it’s not a huge issue, you should be able to change it. But not only that, it’s such an amazing feeling to watch the idea you created, turn into your home.
Enjoy this moment – you can be proud of yourself.
