Moving with Kids? Here’s How to Cope

Moving with Kids? Here’s How to Cope

Whether you’re moving around the block or to a whole new country, you’re guaranteed to experience at least a little stress. If you have kids, well there’s a good chance your stress lev else could go right through the roof!

The good news is, that if you take the time to get your kids ready for the move, things might not be so hair-tearingly bad on moving day. Here are some tips to help you make the move go as smoothly as possible:

Talk to the Kids

Whether your kid is 5 or 15, you should talk to them about the move. Let them know what to expect and what will happen on the day. Do this well in advance and make sure the information you give them is age appropriate.

Let Them Pack

Okay, don’t let the kids pack. That would be a disaster! But, do let them help with the process by passing you tape or bubble wrapping your least fragile stuff. This will help them to feel part of the process and hopefully get them excited about the move.

Throw a Leaving Party

A leaving party where they get to say goodbye to friends, neighbors, and family is a great way to turn what might be an upsetting experience into a positive one for them.

Take Your Time

If you have kids, it’s never a good idea to rush the prices of moving. So, hold off on calling bekins to arrange that removal, put the bubble wrap away and take your time to really explain the process, plan the move and ensure that you’re all in the best possible place. Taking it slow will only help to make the process calmer and more pleasant for everyone involved.

Address Their Concerns

If your children have any concerns, and they voice them to you, don’t just dismiss them. Respect your kids and answer their questions as best they can, accommodating them where possible.

Move When Things are Calm

I know that sometimes you just have to move when you have to move, but if you have the choice, it’s never a bad idea to wait until things are calm. For example, waiting until the kids’ school vacation or delaying your move until your children have gotten over a trauma (like a death in the family) will help to ensure that they’re in the right frame of mind and that they won’t experience too much upheaval all at once.

Pack a ‘Fun’ Bag

When you’re packing your stuff up, make sure that you keep a few fun toys, like the ones at  Fishpond, out of the removal van, and stuff your kids’ backpacks with lots of things to keep them entertained during the trip to your new home. If they’re having fun, they won’t be so anxious, and they won’t stress you out so much with their antics.

Label the Kids’ Stuff

Labeling the children’s stuff very clearly and ensuring it’s all in one box will really help to keep things calm at the other end because you’ll be able to reunite them with the things they’re familiar with right away. It’ll be a lifesaver – believe me.

Go Green: Home, Makeup & Beyond

Go Green: Home, Makeup & Beyond

If the 21st century were to have a mantra, it would be the push for everyone to go green. Once the preserve of hippies and those who picketed oil production, being eco-friendly has now well and truly crossed into the mainstream.

Of course, just because we know we should be more green aware doesn’t mean it’s necessarily something you’ve been able to do. One of the major reasons for this is the perception that going green is actually incredibly expensive – far more than the non-green alternatives that most of us have come to rely on.

This doesn’t actually have to be the case. As with every other kind of industry, sure, there are expensive options that come with an eco-friendly label – but there are more affordable choices too if you’re willing to look for them.

So if you’ve been wondering on how you might be able to go green without spending too much green, then never fear, the alternatives are here.

Go Green At Home

By far the quickest and simplest way of ticking the eco-friendly box at home is to convert your energy needs from reliance on fossil fuels to more sustainable measures. Not only will this help you contribute to the long-term health of the planet, but you might actually be surprised by the renewable energy savings that are on offer.

For an additional benefit, it’s worth heading into the attic to inspect the insulation – or add some if there’s nothing there. If you’re fed up of spending most of winter too scary to turn the heating up for fear of fuel bills, this can make a real difference.

Go Green With Makeup

Beauty products might not be an essential, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their place in the green living eco-system. It’s unfortunately a lot more difficult to track down products that are made sustainably, but there is a hack you can use: look for cruelty-free. Generally, if a makeup brand is investing in cruelty-free products (i.e. products that aren’t tested on animals) then it is more sustainable and ethical in every other mode of production.

There’s an easy way to see if the items in your makeup bag pass the test by using the search function on the Leaping Bunny website. The Leaping Bunny certification is highly coveted and any brand that has it will have passed serious muster to achieve it. Plus the bonus is you can be sure your products are cruelty-free always.

Go Green With Cleaning

The final mention for the quest for more eco-friendly products goes to household cleaning. Many household cleaners contain chemicals which are doing great harm to the environment, as well as the air quality in our own homes.

There is a multitude of more ecologically-aware brands to choose from. There’s a good starter list here, while you could also research homemade alternatives for the other products in your home.

The same concerns should apply to how you wash your clothes, too. A lot of water is washed down into the sewage system with every wash, so you want to make sure the detergents you’re using pass muster when it comes to this basic household necessity.

Put A Bubble Around Your Home

Put A Bubble Around Your Home

Your home is your pride and joy, and your family home keeps your loved ones sheltered from all the problems beyond its walls. However, your home can only protect you as long as you take measures to keep it safe.

Even if any of the following incidents never occur at your home, it’s good to know you’re protected by a good insurance policy. As well as protecting your home from damage caused by fire, water, or termites, some insurance policies also protect against damage caused by dog bites, and it can cover the cost of bringing your home up to standard after a covered loss. It’s good to shop around for the best insurance, so visit or other companies to make sure you get the best deal for your home. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

Water damage

The chances of water damage increase if you live in an area that’s prone to heavy rain. The best thing you can do to prevent water from getting into your home is to regularly inspect your roof for leaks. If water starts leaking into your attic, it can get your insulation wet, which will lead to rot and mold. You should also clean your gutters at least twice a year to make sure they drain water away from the foundation. If you have any trees growing near your house, your should trim them regularly to stop them from crashing into your property during a bad storm.

All it takes in one breakin to wreck your sense of safety in your home. You can prevent burglary with basic precautions, such as keeping the doors locked, installing motion sensor lighting at the entrances, and investing in a good burglar alarm. You can also protect your home from burglary by getting to know your neighbors. Crime rates tend to be lower in a tight-knit community because neighbors are more likely to watch out for each other and can easily spot a stranger. You should also walk around the outside of your house and try to look at it through the eyes of a burglar; take note of any vulnerable spots, any valuables that can be seen through the window, and any potential hiding spots.

Fire safety

Even if you have insurance to cover fire damage, you still have to deal with the upheaval of looking at the extent of the destruction, dealing with the fire department and the insurance company, and uprooting your life while your home is repaired. However, it’s easier on your emotional state if you prevent fire damage in the first place. Every home must have an up to date fire alarm installed, and it is your responsibility to make sure that it is properly maintained. It’s a good idea to sit down with your family and develop a timely exit to protect them from a fire. If you can’t put out a fire, you need to get out as soon as possible.
